USA Today published an article today, “Native Americans detained in Trump’s Minnesota ICE raids,” by Eduardo Cuevas examining concerns around racial profiling and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) practices. National attention to the detention of Native Americans during ICE encounters has grown this past year, with reported incidents increasing. The most recent detentions of Native Americans have occurred this past week in Minnesota.
Caroline LaPorte, Director of the Safe Women, Strong Nations project, was interviewed for the article along with representatives from the Native American Rights Fund and Oglala Sioux Tribal President Frank Star Comes Out. LaPorte highlighted the complications that arise when ICE agents do not recognize tribal identification, as well as the impact of the Supreme 8 Supreme Court decision on ICE justification for detaining individuals.
