Workshops in 2005

November - Maya Q'eqchi' - El Estor, Guatemala

We conducted a three-day workshop in El Estor, Guatemala for more than seventy-five Maya Q'eqchi' leaders.

Due to the fact that most of these Maya Q'eqchi' leaders and their communities are monolingual, the training was carried out in Spanish and simultaneously translated to Q'eqchi'. Indigenous communities in the El Estor region are now facing renewed nickel mining in their territories, this time by the Canadian company Skye Resources. We were asked to conduct a training to provide local Maya Q'eqchi' leaders with the political and legal tools necessary to defend their communities and environment from unwanted and unsustainable mining activities. This training was very successful and lead to further collaboration between the Center, Maya Q'eqchi' communities, and the human rights NGO devoted to the defense of the Maya Q'eqchi' people-the Defensoría Q'eqchi'.

October - COAJ, Comunidad Aborigen - Buenos Aires, Argentina
