Using the Declaration to End Violence Against Native Women

by Jana Walker - Despite some strides in addressing violence against Native women, there is no doubt United States law falls far short of even the minimum human rights standards set forth in the UN Declaration on the Right of Indigenous Peoples.  Considering the United States’ trust responsibility to Indian nations, coupled with the standards in the Declaration, it is imperative that the U.S. act now to end the epidemic of violence against Native women.

Helena group working with U.N. committee on violence

More than one in three Native American women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetimes.

And 80 percent of the assaults will be committed by non-Indians.

These startling statistics, based on U.S. Department of Justice statistics, have caught the attention of a United Nations committee meeting this week in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Indian Law Resource Center in Helena is part of a working group of Native American organizations that have brought this issue before the U.N. committee.
