Caroline LaPorte, Chris Foley, and Tia Bahozhoni presented as partners in the National Workgroup on Safe Housing for American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian Survivors of Gender-Based Violence held in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 19-20, 2026. Caroline presented on the Center's art as advocacy weaving project, "Woven in Place" as well as provided general updates to the workgroup. The gathering, which included Native advocates and leaders from all over Indian Country and Hawaii, highlighted the need for secure, stable, safe, and accessible housing for Native survivors of gender based violence. The workgroup also included a tour of the Minnesota Indian Women's Resource Center, and presentations from Fornidos Housing Solutions, Women’s Advocates, and the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma, and Mental Health. The knowledge and experiences shared in this space have helped push forward the advocacy for Native women and children's protections, and the Center is grateful for the ongoing connections created from this workgroup.
