Montana Free Press Indigenous Affairs Series, "The Shelter Gap", features Caroline LaPorte

Journalist Nora Mabie explores the ongoing housing crisis on Indian reservations in Montana in the three part series, “The Shelter Gap.” This Montana Free Press series examines both the consequences and root causes of this crisis.

Mabie spoke tribal leaders and experts, including Caroline LaPorte, ILRC staff attorney. Caroline leads our Safe Women, Strong Nations project, and in the interview she shared insights on the vital connection between housing, safety, and culture: “If you’re a tribal community, and your tribal members, your descendants, your kids, your grandkids, want to stay close to that nucleus of culture, that’s what having access to housing does…It keeps us together.”
