Accelerating Empowerment of Indigenous Women and Girls in the Americas
On March 12, the Indian Law Resource Center joined with nine other indigenous organizations to co-sponsor a panel, "Accelerating Empowerment of Indigenous Women and Girls in the Americas," as a parallel event during this year’s 68th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. In addition to the Indian Law Resource Center, the co-sponsors of this event were:
Alaska Native Women’s Resource Center (AKNWRC)
Coordination of the Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB)
Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Amazon (AIDESEP)
International Mayan League
National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center (NIWRC)
Native Women’s Society of the Great Plains
Regional Coordination of the Indigenous Peoples of San Lorenzo (CORPI-SL)
Regional Organization of the Indigenous Peoples of the East (ORPIO)
Pouhana 'O Nā Wāhine
The 90-minute virtual event featured speakers from seven organizations in Guatemala, Peru and the United States. The speakers each discussed the need for long-term sustained action in their respective regions and countries to address violence against indigenous women and factors that intensify such violence, including violations of indigenous peoples’ rights to their lands and resources and right of self-government, poverty, climate change, environmental degradation, and other human rights violations.
