The Center’s Executive Director Robert T. Coulter helped kick off the Breaking Through Power event May 23, 2016, in Washington, D.C. Speaking under the theme Breaking Through Power: How it’s Done, Coulter shared the challenges facing indigenous peoples today and what can be done to make sure the rights of indigenous peoples are protected. The four-day event is bringing together accomplished advocates and diverse groups – fighters for justice – to show that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts and that it’s easier than you may think to make major changes. Ralph Nader, a long-time personal supporter of the Indian Law Resource Center, organized the event to spark fresh energies, ideas, and strategies to “flex our civic muscle.”
